Artist brings her dream to M-town

by Press And Journal Staff : 1/30/2008

A Pennsylvania artist who recently moved to the borough will open an arts gallery near the downtown district.

Christine Goldbeck  will open Arts on Union at 203 N. Union Street on Saturday, Feb. 2 in what had been the dental practice of Dr. Andrew Welkie. Goldbeck and her partner, Jay Howes, bought the property late last year and have been working to get the site in order. The gallery will feature her photographs and paintings and will host guest artists.
The Feb. 2 open house will begin at 11 a.m. and continue through 6 p.m. This event will give people the chance to meet the artist, view the exhibit and learn about forthcoming exhibits and workshops. For the time being, gallery hours will be by announcement or by appointment.

“I’ve been showing my work in various locations, designing and undertaking exhibits in communities and teaching in public spaces and I have long dreamed of having my own space to exhibit and work and to share with other artists,” Goldbeck said. “When we saw Middletown and this property, I knew this was THE place to live and work. It has a blend of everything I need and it has a marvelous support system for business opportunity and growth.”

Anyone out and about town early mornings and late afternoons might recognize Goldbeck. She’s the camera-toting woman who walks with Ginger, the smiling golden retriever who sits at all street crossings and observes traffic before continuing the journey.

A member of Middletown Area Arts Collective, Allied Artists of Schuylkill County and other arts groups, Goldbeck, 41, is a native of Schuylkill County and holds a Master of Fine Arts-Interdisciplinary Arts (MFA-IA) degree. The author of a print short story collection, editor and publisher at minecountry.com and designer/artist at christinegoldbeck.com, her articles, poems and photographs have won national, state and regional awards. She is a 2003-05 recipient of a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Special Opportunity Stipend for her unpublished novel “Reclamation.” A book discussion facilitator and Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Goldbeck is a former newspaper photojournalist and news editor. She is employed at the Pennsylvania House of Representatives by the House Republican Caucus as executive director of the Urban Affairs Committee.

“I’m so glad to have found Middletown, the arts cooperative and to have met so many wonderful people in the community. I am looking forward to bringing creative projects to town and to complementing the arts and artists at MAAC,” Goldbeck said.
