Volunteering - What is it?

Written by Thursday, 02 May 2013 17:01
OK so back to the topic of volunteering.  I think I got my political comments out of the way; at least until the regular election in November.   I decided to take a quick look at the word "Volunteer", what does it mean?  How do you do it?  The word "volunteer" was first recorded in 1755.  WOW that happens to be the same year Middletown was founded! Anyway, the word volunteer is a verb which is an action.  It is a selfless act.  It is when one does something for an individual person or group without to need or desire…

Something new

Written by Wednesday, 01 May 2013 03:36
When I first got the email from the PJ asking me if I wanted to do a blog my initial thought was, sure, why not I can usually think of something to say about any thing. But when it came time to actually write something I found myself sitting at the computer screen not knowing what to say. Some of my thoughts were, what if no one listens, what will Karen think, what will my kids think (will they be embarrassed?) what if my boss sees this... And then it struck me, I really don't know what to say or…

Wonder wear the weekend went

Written by Tuesday, 30 April 2013 02:26
I can not beleive where time goes, Friday a great day and got some things done. Sat. was beautiful and did some running errands and mowed the grass. Spent sometime taking some pictures and then returned to the friends house for a burger and drink. Just like that it is Sunday and we are in Shippensburg for some round robin scramages. Sure was nice enough when we left Middletown and by the time we got to Ship it got windy, colder, and later some rain drops. What happened ???? The girls played softball and did very well, my grand daughter…

First off I want to give KUDOS to the New Beginnings Church Youth Group for VOLUNTEERING and cleaning up a few locations in Middletown.  Your hard work has not gone un-noticed.    As we approach the Primary Election Day May 21st, I encourage everyone who is registered voter to get out and vote in the primaries.  Your vote does count!  Middletown is currently sitting at a cross roads.  Many people are at odds with our current borough council and quite honestly I am one of those people. I will be voting for new people to be seated on borough council.…

Busy day, busy weekend

Written by Friday, 26 April 2013 02:47
Wow just got home from the firehouse after cleaning the 4th oven in 3 days, what a dirty job. Done now and looking good, ready for a big wedding reception this weekend. Need to clean the bath rooms and do the vestabule windows yet and we are ready.   Great day on the softball diamond with the varsity team winning over Palmyra and the JV team winning also. Got some pix of the JV team who was at home. Some great kids there playing their hearts out. Give them credit, they do keep trying and winning some too. Friday 4/26…

This should be interesting

Written by Wednesday, 24 April 2013 19:58
Speaking today to group of journalists at a program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society Of Newspaper Editors. I'm lead off batter and asked to get the group charged and enthused about the day ahead of them. Have to admit it's going to be a challenge, especially with yesterday's story by the Wall St. Journal that listed the worst jobs of 2013:  1) Reporter (newspaper) 2) Lumberjack 3) Enlisted Military Personnel 4) Actor 5) Oil Rig Worker Always like a challenge though. Cheers!

Keep on rolling...

Written by Wednesday, 24 April 2013 17:46
I have a confession. I don't know a lot about sports.Growing up, I played the basics, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, but they fizzled out of my life over the years. It wasn't until college, that I fell in love with rugby and played it until I graduated. But I digress, because really, I wanted to talk about my experience with sports in this job.In December, I started to cover Steel-High basketball (mostly the Lady Rollers), and I watched them triumph week by week. During those few months of the season, I learned a little more about basketball, but I learned…

Casting Stones

Written by Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:44
Well, since I'm fairly new at this, I am worried that I am  going to end up being a Debbie Downer, and keep writing about sad things or lecturing about bad behavior.  Honestly I want to write about something upbeat and funny and I promise I will.  But....I keep hearing comments, seeing comments, watching "bad behavior" and getting all riled up and then I want to write about it!  So here I go..... As we enter into the heat of the campaign season and get closer to those primary elections, I can not only feel the bad blood, I can actually…

A group worth volunteering for

Written by Wednesday, 24 April 2013 12:09
Well now that hopefully I have gotten peoples juices flowing and ready to volunteer, today I want to highlight an organization who is worthy of volunteering for.  How about the Elk's Theatre and the SAVE THE ELKS! Campaign (STE)?  The Middletown Elk's Theatre is 101 years old and will be 102 this October.  The theatre is owned by the Greater Middletown Economic Development Corporation (GMEDC).  Back in September 2012 a group kicked off the SAVE THE ELKS! Campaign to raise funds to help bring the theatre into the 21st Century.  Movie technology is changing and forcing movies theatres to change…

Softball, softball and some more softball

Written by Wednesday, 24 April 2013 02:31
Hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks is the what the songs says. I can't find a better way to spend a late afternoon or early evening then watching young high school kids play ball. The batter up call heeds well to the call for the younger leagues also, I have watched 5 games not counting on TV between Monday and Tuesday evening. I am very proud to say I support the high school and the little leaguers in their contest and hope each player gets the oppurtunity to get that hit, that great play and to score a run. With…
