Betty J. Gum
Betty Jean Gum, 95, of Middletown, Pa., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2019.
Betty, affectionately known as “Aunt Betty” to her many friends and family, loved her family dearly and best exemplified these traits: compassion, positive attitude, sense of humor, and strong will. She was a fan of the Middletown Blue Raiders, Penn State football, and Cincinnati Reds baseball. She loved her church, Wesley United Methodist Church, reading, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was a proud graduate of the Middletown Area High School Class of 1941. Betty also volunteered for 25 years, serving lunches at Seven Sorrows Catholic Grade School. Her words to live by during tough times were: “one step and then another,” and “this too shall pass.”
She is preceded in death by her twin sons, Terry Lee and Michael Ray, and her siblings, Dorothy Gillentine, Pearl Snavely, and Carl Scholing.
Those left behind to cherish her memories are nieces: Dolly Brandt and Peggy Sasso of Georgia; Janice Gould (Burt), and Heather Smith (Todd) of Tennessee; and Susie Spadone, (Augie) of Pennsylvania; nephews: Larry Sinkovich of New Jersey; and Carl Scholing of Pennsylvania; and numerous great-great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 64 Ann Street, Middletown, Pa., on Friday, August 16 at 3 p.m. Visitation at the church will be from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Interment will be immediately following at Hillsdale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 64 Ann Street, Middletown, PA 17057.
A special thanks to the Middletown Home and Hospice of Central Pennsylvania for the tender care they provided to Betty.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Matinchek Funeral Home, 260 E. Main St., Middletown.
