Coach Myers offers up thanks for another great Blue Raider football season

“We are working hard. Come out and see us.”

The 2017 Blue Raiders football team adopted that slogan as its message to the community this year. This slogan has been around for multiple generations of the Middletown Blue Raiders Football family. You heard our message and did exactly what we asked: came out and supported our football program. We would like to give a special thank-you to this community for its support on and off the football field!

We achieved back-to-back Mid-Penn Conference Capital Division titles and back-to-back district championship titles, and appeared in back-to-back state championship games. This team is the best in the eastern half of the state of Pennsylvania.

Middletown High School football has been in existence since 1921. While the outcome of the state championship game was not what we hoped for, there is no doubt that we made history. While the success of the past two seasons is unprecedented in Middletown football history, it is important to acknowledge that all previous Blue Raiders established the foundations and traditions upon which this success was built.

The Blue Raiders football coaching staff is extremely proud of what was accomplished on the field and what is still being accomplished off the field. As I often say, “Football is what you do, not who you are.”

I would like to share the annual goals of the Raiders football team. Each player sets six personal goals in the offseason. Your boys are striving to accomplish or have already accomplished each of the following goals:

Morals and values: Be young men who stand on morals and values.

Academics, further education, career: Get good grades and be a good student-athlete in the classroom.

Personal family: Help at home and be respectful.

Football family: Put the person next to you first and always look out for each other when in need. There is no such thing as a former Blue Raider. There are only Blue Raiders.

Physical conditioning: We practice, practice, practice … hit the weight room, run miles and hills.

Caring and giving back to the community: We help out with little league football and provide gifts for a local family at Christmas. We provide the community with a week-long youth camp every June.

The Blue Raiders coaching staff would like to thank the student-athletes, the parents of the students, family members of the coaches who sacrifice family time so that we can build young men on and off the field, and the Middletown community for all of the support you provide to the football program. We would also like to give special thanks to:

The Middletown High School grounds crew: You took so much pride in ensuring that Memorial Field was the best field in the midstate. You took pride in preparing our field and we are grateful.

Administration: By taking care of the behind the scenes details involved with advancing in playoff rounds of football, you ensured that our boys had no distractions. Thank you for managing our school with the utmost professionalism.

The band and cheerleaders: You made sure that everyone knew how loud and great the Blue Wave can be. Thank you for always cheering on our team.

Mr. Larry Byers and Mr. Charlie Elfner: You made sure we got to each game safe and sound. We thank you for your excellent driving to places far and near, and for the time you gave to our team.

Words cannot express how thankful we are as a team to have this community supporting us!

In closing, I would like to leave you with a quote I enjoy: “Success is not a destination, it’s a journey.”

“Whatever It takes!”

Brett Myers is the head coach of the Middletown Blue Raiders football team.
