Dr. Donald Reid was born on June 23, 1930 in Middletown, Pennsylvania to the late Rachel Colston and Roosevelt Colston. Don loved to learn and graduated 2nd in his class from Middletown High School in 1948 and earned the nickname “Buckets” for his basketball skills.
After high school, Don attended Lincoln University and later graduated from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor of Science degree. Dr. Reid received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine, and was the first African-American to intern at Harrisburg Hospital.
Don entered the U.S. Navy Medical Corp. where he spent 22 years and trained in internal medicine and achieved the highest rank of navy captain.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Navy, Don was appointed by Governor Thornburgh, Executive Deputy Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Don went on to serve as the Regional Medical Director of the U.S. Postal Service and at the Bureau of Disability Determinations for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition to his many honors, Don is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) and holds an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Elizabethtown College.
In between his many degrees and his distinguished military career, he met the late Judith Emily Hilton (Reid) and they married in Middletown in 1958. They celebrated 36 years of marriage until Judy’s passing in 1995.
Dr. Donald Reid entered eternal rest on June 19, 2018, four days shy of his 88th birthday, in Middletown, Pa. Don lived a good long life and he was truly a great man. As we celebrate his life and legacy, Don will be truly missed by his daughter, Donna Marie Reid, his son, Whitney Hilton Reid, daughter-in-law, Sherri Reid, granddaughter, Jada Emily Reid and grandson, Whitney Hilton Reid, Jr.; brothers, (former) Mayor Robert Reid (wife Priscilla), and Thomas Reid (wife Althea); and nieces, nephews, many other relatives, loved ones, friends and the family dog, Buddy. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Frey Village for caring for our father in his final days.
A tribute to his life will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, 329 Market St., Middletown, PA, 17057, with the Rev. C. Victoria Brown officiating.
Viewing will be on Monday, June 25, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Matinchek Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 260 E. Main St., Middletown, with a second viewing to be held at Ebenezer A.M.E Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial with full military honors will be at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
