The funeral for Spc. Mason James Guckavan, 21, who died of a gunshot wound on Oct. 26 while stationed at Fort Wainwright in Alaska was held Nov. 8 at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church.

Final salute to Middletown's fallen soldier

The funeral for Middletown Area High School 2016 graduate Spc. Mason James Guckavan was held Nov. 8 at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. 

Guckavan, 21, died of a gunshot wound on Oct. 26 while stationed at Fort Wainwright in Alaska. 

The Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating Guckavan's death. He reportedly died in the barracks at Fort Wainwright. There is no official determination as to whether the discharge of the firearm was intentional or accidental.

Burial with full military honors was held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery and was private for family only.

According to U.S. Army Alaska, Guckavan was an infantryman with the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, United States Army Alaska. He joined the Army from Middletown in August 2016. Following completion of training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in December 2016.
