For the second day in a row, fire departments respond to Middletown's west side

For the second day in a row Friday, multiple area departments responded to a potential fire on the west side of Middletown.

Like Thursday’s call just a few blocks away, there was more smoke than fire on Nissley Street on Friday.

A resident of 202 Nissley St. called 911 before 8 a.m. when they opened the door to the basement to see thick smoke. There was also the smell of oil. They earlier in the morning had turned on the furnace.

The definitive cause of the smoke was uncertain, but by a little after 8, most of the responding departments had left the scene. There was no report of an actual fire, and there appeared to be little damage.

Middletown, Londonderry and Lower Swatara were among the departments that responded.

Thursday’s call was on North Spring Street near West Water Street. The cause appeared to be a malfunction with the gas stove. There was very little damage except for the front door, which firefighters forced to gain entry.
