Happy Flag Day, all!

School is out, graduations are over and summer plans are underway!

Father’s Day is around the corner on Sunday, June 18. Now would be a good time to think about how you want to show your love to the fathers and dads in your life. A few years back our church gave out spatulas with candy bars attached to each dad who attended the service. I like to think it wasn’t just about grilling, but it was for all kinds of cooking!

Happy Father’s Day to those who are dads and I hope you have a wonderful last week of spring. Email me to let me know your news to share!

A little more about San Francisco: We were last on Alcatraz Island admiring the beautiful flowers. I was impressed with the self-guided tour sound track each tourist received to walk the grounds at their own speed. It is a place most known as being the prison that once jailed Al Capone, Robert Stroud aka “Birdman of Alcatraz” and many others, but it has a long history of incarcerating many different groups.

You could spend hours at Alcatraz, reading about the inmates, prison escape attempts, viewing education videos and walking along the paths open to visitors. I found it fascinating and could have stayed longer, but my group was ready to catch the ferry and return to “civilization.” They had a cool souvenir shop, but I didn’t get to spend too much time in it.

Alcatraz trivia

• Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala sailed into San Francisco Bay and named the islands in 1775.

• A lighthouse was planned for Alcatraz by Mexican governor Pio Pico, but a war and a new government intervened in 1846.

• Alcatraz was purchased by the military governor of California for the United States from the Mexican government in 1847.

• The United States began to fortify Alcatraz in 1853. A year later, the first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast began operations on Alcatraz.

• In 1861, the first civilian prisoners arrived on the island, including the crew of a Confederate privateer.

• Advancing military technology made Alcatraz’s fortifications obsolete in 1892.

• U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy ordered Alcatraz closed in 1963.

• “Indians of All Tribes” began a 19-month occupation on Alcatraz in 1969.

• The National Park Service developed programs and the first tourists arrived on Alcatraz in 1973.

For the Dads

This Sunday will be Father’s Day,

We honored mothers in May.

Monday will revert back to kid’s day again,

And sadly we move on from honoring men.

But Sunday is the one day of the year,

That we hold our fathers to be so dear.

It should be a joy and not a bother,

To be especially nice to your father.

Make him a cake or make his lunch,

Play games and let him win a bunch.

You don’t need to spend a dime,

Just love him and give him time!

— SLAP

Quote of the Week

“The gift of presence can be an inconvenience, an interruption, and a blessing to both sides.” — Anna Rendell, author.

What is a good way to appreciate fathers?

“Do something with him. Show Dad that he is someone you like as well as love.” — Craig Mosher, Lower Swatara.

“Buy them hot sauce and pickles!” — Daniel Clark, Connellsville.

“The gift of time!” — Greta Conrad, Mechanicsburg.

“Tell them ’I love you,’ give them a big hug … and make sure they relax on their day!” — LeeAnn Hocker, Lower Paxton.

“He likes beer, so I would ask my brother to help me make him a beer cabinet.” — Olivia Yeich, 11, Lower Swatara.

“I would get him a cake and put a sign on it that says, best grandpa.” — Brayden Blockus, 9, Lower Swatara.

“We treat him to stuff he won’t buy for himself.” — Natalie Cook, West Hanover.

Proverb for the Week
