John E. Campbell
John E. Campbell, of Middletown, Pa., passed away on June 14 after a brief illness at the age of 91. He is survived by his daughter, Gwen Krebs of Middletown, Pa. and his son, Robert Campbell (Sudie Price) of Media, Pa. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Valerie Hitt (John) and Ken Krebs (Judy), and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene Welty Campbell, son John Campbell, Jr. and five siblings.
John was born in Danville, Pa. to the late William E. Campbell and Margaret Mae.
He worked for Roadway Express for over 25 years, winning many awards for safety. During World War II, he served in the Army as an MP, returning from the war on the U.S.S. General CC Ballou. He was a long-term member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hummelstown, Pa, and a life member of the Moose Lodge 410, VFW Post 8638 and American Legion Post 594.
John was an accomplished bowler and loved word puzzles, gospel music and his dogs. He and Arlene spent many years travelling the United States, visiting Hawaii, Florida and Mackinaw Island, Michigan.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Matinchek Funeral Home, 260 E. Main St., Middletown, Pa. At the same venue on Friday, June 22, a visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Martha S. Boyd as the officiant, and a burial at Middletown Cemetery following the service. The services will conclude with a memorial luncheon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion, 137 East High Street, Middletown, Pa.
