Londonderry Township goes forward with plan for hiking trails

Londonderry Township is moving forward with hiking trails that will start at Sunset Park.

The township advertised for bids to construct the first leg of the trails, running from Sunset Park to the future Harrisburg Rugby Football Club field along Sunset Drive, according to township engineer Andrew Kenworthy.

Part of this first phase will include a composting restroom, which means that it won’t be connected to water or waste lines. It also includes creating part of a new parking lot near the public works building.

Bids will be accepted until Aug. 29, and then the township will award the project. Construction might start in early October.

The work could be completed before winter, according to Kenworthy.

The township intends to dedicate the trail to veterans. The trail, which will be a total of 2.4 miles, would run along the western edge of Sunset Golf Course, up Sunset Drive and along Hillsdale Drive.

Plans call for the trails to connect to the potential Lytle Farms housing development being considered along East Harrisburg Pike.

Eventually, the trails may be connected to other regional trail systems.

In the past, Londonderry staff members have said they plan to pave parts of the trail to make it ADA accessible and have picnic tables and benches along the trail.
