Middletown Boy Scout Troop 594 has had a busy few months with summer camp, canoeing trips and community service.

Troop 594 participated in the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation Summer Camp in July, bringing 16 young men and three Scout leaders. They participated in numerous activities such as swimming, archery, robotics  and studying life-saving techniques, which helped them earn well over 50 merit badges. The boys sustained days of rain which resulted in significant flooding and some setbacks.

The Scouts participated in a canoe trip down the Swatara River recently, giving some of them an opportunity to earn their Canoe Merit Badge.

One group of boys got caught by a large rock on the north side under the Hummelstown Railroad Bridge and was unable to get themselves pulled out. Without knowing it, the Scouts were going through an Olympic kayaking course that was to be used the next day for practice. A guide from the course was off to the side of the embankment watching and was able to assist the boys and show them how to get their canoe pulled out and away from the rock . While helping them, the guide also taught the boys a technique on how to “pry” their canoe, enabling them to maneuver down the river.

Troop 594 has several upcoming activities and events. Their 17th annual Chicken Barbecue is being held Oct. 7. Pickup will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dailey's Gulf at 200 E. Main St., Middletown, with a cost of $8.50 for the dinner. Presale tickets are being sold through Troop 594/Cub Scout Pack 113. Extra dinners will be available for those who have not purchased a ticket in advance, but they are first-come, first-serve until they run out.

The Scouts will hold their fall Court of Honor Ceremony on Oct. 9 at Hoffer Park this year, which will recognize each Scout with their accomplishments and all their hard work for the past few months.

Their annual Food for Scouting will be held the first two weekends of November. Scouts will hang door signs the first week and pick up the nonperishable food items the following week.
