It was loud. Electric. After a three-year drought, Middletown hosted a high school basketball playoff game, and the rare opportunity not only brought townies to the gym, but also a large contingent of students, all dressed in blue and in full voice.

 

It’s the kind of scenario basketball players dream about. And for one quarter, it was a dream come true for the Middletown girls’ basketball team.

They shot lights out in a frenetic gallop up and down the court with Mid-Penn Conference rival West Perry, nailing 3-point shots and grabbing loose balls. When scoring leader Ja’lynn Burton-Jones buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer, as the excited student section counted down the seconds, the Blue Raiders stormed to a 19-12 lead, and the cheers were deafening.

But West Perry methodically worked its strategy – the taller Mustangs went inside, inside, inside, inside – to take the lead midway through the second quarter, take control of the game in the third quarter and eventually eliminate Middletown, 47-35, in a District 3 Class AAA playoff contest on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The loss ended a surprising season for the Raiders (19-5). Picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the conference’s Capital Division, Middletown won the division crown – its first in team history –  finishing two games ahead of West Perry (19-5) . . .
