I forgot to mention that this past Sunday was Grandparent’s Day. Sorry about that. I hope you did something kind and thoughtful for the grandparents in your life.

It is not too late – go ahead and send them a card or give them a call! It is never too late to do something kind.

I hope you are having a good week, adjusting to the new season of back-to-school and, with 10 days remaining of summer, well, just enjoying what you have left!

Motorcycle breakfast

The Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department’s last motorcycle summer breakfast, featuring a buffet style menu, rain or shine, of scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, sausage patties, sausage gravy with biscuits, ham, bacon, baked oatmeal, toast with coffee and juice will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23 at the firehouse on Fulling Mill Road. Highspire celebrates

Highspire Bicentennial Train Day at the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad in Middletown will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15. The M&H Railroad will be running at 10 a.m. followed by a trolley ride at 11:15 a.m. Another trolley will run at noon, if needed.

There is a fee for train ride and trolley ride tickets. Proceeds benefit the Highspire Bicentennial Committee.

The first annual Highspire Car and Vehicle Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 from noon until 5 p.m. (rain date is Oct. 6). Come out and see vehicles from yesteryear and today.Cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire apparatus and ambulances – plus food and entertainment.

Dinner is ready

The monthly Church of God dinner will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24. The menu is roast turkey, stuffing, whipped potatoes, veggie and dessert. All are welcome to come by.

Chicken barbecue

The Lower Swatara Lions Club will be holding their first Chicken Bar-B-Q on Saturday, Sept.  29 at the Lions building in Shope Gardens.  Tickets are available only from a Lions Club member or by calling 717-215-3099.

Pickup for the dinners will be 11 a.m. that day. Please come out and support our Lions as they do so much for our community.

Walk for Life

Come out and support  Middletown’s Morning Star Pregnancy Service center and its two other locations on Saturday, Sept. 29. The annual walk fundraiser will be held on City Island, with registration at 9 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. after a free pancake breakfast.

Clowns and face painting will be on site for the younger set.

We are looking for walkers, joggers, stroller-pushers and donations. The walk is only 2 miles and will be held rain or shine. Great prizes are available. For more information call 944-3888 or go to MorningStarChoices.com.

Slavic Food Fest

Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in America is hosting its annual Slavic Food Fest from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday,

Oct. 7 at 5501 Locust Lane, Harrisburg. Admission and parking are free.

Ethnic foods including homemade pierogies, halupki, halushki, kielbasa, hot dogs (with or without sauerkraut) and burgers (Macedonia style or American) will be available, as well as a Slavic store and church tours.

A Basket Raffle with over 50 theme baskets will be held.
