A victim was reportedly scammed out of $550 while trying to purchase tickets online to a Penn State football game, Middletown police say.

Police said the victim first sought to buy the tickets by sending cash to someone through text photos over Facebook.

The alleged seller then instructed the victim to send more amounts of money by purchasing Amazon gift cards and by setting up a Steam Wallet account, according to police. Steam Wallet accounts are used to pay for gaming and other content.

The victim did as instructed, but when she asked the alleged seller for the tickets, the alleged seller “stopped communicating” with the victim, police said.

The scam was reported to police on Sept. 28.
