An estimated crowd of about 3,500 filed through Hoffer Park on Aug. 6 for National Night Out 2019 sponsored by the Middletown Police Department.

This year’s event featured 42 vendor displays, a Kids Zone area, live performances, and a free barbecue hosted by Grace & Mercy Church of Middletown. Free rides were available onsite by the Middletown-Hummelstown Railroad and Premiere No. 1 Limousine Trolley with the HIA shuttle bus.

Walking exhibitors included McGruff the Crime Dog, the Pennsylvania State Police K-9 Unit, Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, and state Rep. Tom Mehaffie of the 106th District. U.S. armed forces on hand included the Air Force, Air National Guard, Army, National Guard, Marines and Navy.

This year’s National Night Out was organized by Middletown Police Detective Sgt. Gary Rux and Sgt. Scott Yoder, who said they began organizing the event in May.

Yoder said he hoped attendees would leave “with new friendships and camaraderie in the community.”

Rux added that the public is welcome to “come and say hi to us all year round and see how much we care about our community.”

Organizers gave special thanks to community responders that participated, including the Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office, Londonderry Township Fire Company and Fire Police, Middletown Police Department, Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, Pennsylvania State Police, Penn State Emergency Medical Service and University Police, and South Central Emergency Medical Service.
