Editor,

I enjoyed Publisher Joe Sukle’s commentary in the Aug. 22 Press And Journal regarding Chris Courogen, Middletown borough secretary and director of communications (“When control of borough news becomes a blackout’’). I knew after sitting in his office for about four minutes that Courogen was coming from a strange, inhumane place.

And he thinks the Press And Journal is not a “legitimate’’ publication? What makes a former sports writer a “legitimate” borough secretary? Was that one of Borough Council’s moves?

As I recall from history lessons, in the 1940s Adolf Hitler took over the communications sector in Nazi Germany during World War II. This was the first event that came to my mind when I examined Courogen’s gag order on borough employees these days. Generally, suppressed communications suggest a sub-agenda that is not to be widely known.

As you may have heard, council has not only cut off funding to the Middletown Public Library but also written out all of its paid positions from the borough’s payroll – specifically, the library director and the library aides – effective Jan. 1, 2013. Christine Porter, the library director, brings a wealth of knowledge to the library (besides being a sweet person), and it will suffer without her and the others.

The library will be run instead by a board of seven unpaid members who will, coincidentally, be appointed by council.

I have never seen such a thing in all my years.
