If I read Mayor Robert Reid’s comments correctly in the Press And Journal (“Middletown water system to be sold?’’ Aug. 8), other communities “to a person’’ wish their community had a borough-owned electric system. I wonder “to a person’’ if they would want to pay 100-plus percent more for the same electricity and have no choice of providers as we do in the People’s Republic of Middletown?

So far this year, my electricity has averaged 14.76 cents per kilowatt hour. If we had a choice of providers, we could purchase the same product for between 6.47 and 6.99 cents, less than half of the current cost. But then maybe my TV operates better on Middletown electricity.

Why doesn’t the borough get into the gasoline business? Then we would be forced to pay $8 per gallon – and I’m sure “to a person’’ other communities would want to follow suit.
