He was born in Mechanicsburg on March 23, 1943 and was the son of the late William C. and Euphema M. Hoffman Gill.
He attended Mechanicsburg High School where he wrestled and lettered five times; was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Royalton; and was a member of VFW Post #1620, and Anglers & Hunters, both of Middletown, and a life member of Silver Springs Community Fire Co., Mechanicsburg.
He was a retired foreman from the New Cumberland Army Depot with 20 years of federal service; was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, 4th Infantry Division; was a recipient of the Purple Heart and a member of the Order of the Purple Heart; he was an avid hunter, fisherman and NASCAR fan; and he loved spending time with his three special grandchildren and his pets Bear and Buck.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother William L. Gill.
He is survived by his loving wife E. Kay Yost Hammaker Gill; sons Walter G. Yost Sr. of Royalton, Earl L. Hammaker Jr. of Royalton, and Robert G. Hammaker of Enola; and grandchildren Walter Yost Jr., Macie Kay Hammaker, and Rian Ann Hammaker.
A Tribute to his life was held on Tuesday at his church, with Pastor Willie Caraballo officiating.
Burial with military honors was in Hillsdale Cemetery, Londonderry Township.
