Route 39 bridge to be closed next week

Posted

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Dauphin County maintenance crews have scheduled debris removal from underneath the Route 39 bridge over the Swatara Creek at the South Hanover-Derry township line.
Route 39 will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, through Friday, March 24 between East Canal Street and Boat House Road while crews remove debris from underneath the bridge using a crane with a grappling hook. During the closure, a detour which follows Sand Beach Road and East Canal Road will be available.

Over time downed trees and other debris have built up in the Swatara Creek between the bridge piers. This can cause damage to the substructure of the bridge and damming of the creek, according to PennDOT.

The bridge is on a section of Route 39, locally known as Hershey Road, and averages more than 14,400 vehicles traveled daily. The four-span, pre-stressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge was built in 1967.
