The Blue Raider wrestling team had an impressive showing at the Solanco Tournament on Dec. 8-9, despite only sending six wrestlers because of the football state championship game.

The tournament featured 26 teams from Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Sophomore Luke Fegley started off the Raiders with their first tournament champion of the season. Fegley went 4-0 to win the 106 pound bracket.

Fegley racked up 15 points on Dallastown’s Adam Karlie before earning the fall in 5:09. In his second match, Fegley scored a first period pin on Ethan Herr (Donegal). In the semifinal round, Fegley faced No. 1 seed Cassidy Chas of Sanford, Delaware.

Despite giving up an early takedown, Fegley battled back to seal a 5-3 OT win.

Fegley went on to earn the championship with a solid 8-2 victory over Northern Lebanon’s Brandon Breidegan.

At 120 pounds, Ryan Berstler also scored four impressive wins to place fourth.

Berstler started off with a 2-0 win over Sheldon Peiffer (Solanco), before dropping a close 3-2 loss to Carlisle’s Rafael Portilla. Berstler responded by winning three out of his last four matches, pinning Seth Fisher (Northern Lebanon), and earning decisions over Central Dauphin’s Mitchell Arch and Dallastown’s Cael Turnbull.

Berstler lost a heart-breaking consolation finals match to Mark Fasciocco (Germantown Academy). After dominating the action through most of the match, Berstler slipped and suffered a 3-1 overtime loss.

At 132 pounds, junior Nate Brady earned three wins and a fourth-place finish.

Brady defeated Penn Manor’s Caden Rogers 4-1 and Dallastown’s Matt Salyers 7-2 to advance to the semifinal round. Despite another exciting scrambling performance, Brady dropped a 4-0 loss to Northern Lebanon’s Collin Leonard. In his first consolation match, Brady won a hard-fought 3-2 OT rematch with Caden Rogers.

In the end, Brady had to settle for fourth place after losing a 2-1 consolation finals match to Tommy Luke (West Chester East).

At 138 pounds, Joey Spear earned four wins and an eighth-place finish. Spear started with a 1:46 pin over Donegal’s Joe Fox, before falling to Harry Latch (Salesianum, Delaware).

Finding himself buried deep in the consolation bracket, Spear had to fight his way back into medal position.

Spear started with a 2:21 pin over AJ Vegas (Hatboro-Horsham), followed by a 7-1 decision over Hamburg’s Brant Mason.

Spear would score another resounding win, pinning Coatesville’s Shamaur Hall in 4:40, before losing to Carlisle’s Colton Jumper and Susquenita’s Brogan Louden.

Also representing the Blue Raiders at the Solanco Tournament were sophomore Zach Malay (113) and junior Sterling Gray (145), who was able to earn his first match win after taking a year off.
